Discover Khao Lak: Close to Phuket, But Without the Crowds

Written by Zarin Tasnim
About 80 kilometers north of Phuket, you’ll find the quiet coastal beach town of Khao Lak. While Khao Lak is touristy, its much quieter than other places in Thailand like Phuket, Koh Samui, or Chaweng. While you can still find cocktail bars playing music through Khao Lak, it’s not the crazy party atmosphere that’s more common in Phuket. The type of tourists you’ll find here include couples of all ages and people looking to relax, read a book, and soak up the sun. However, there are a number of national parks to explore around the area with mountains, lush forests, mangroves, and waterfalls.

Khao Lak Beaches
One of the highlights of Khao Lak has to be the wide white sand beaches located on the northern end of town. Bordered by tropical trees, captivating rock formations, and refreshing blue waters, you might find yourself wandering up and down these beaches for hours.
On the southern end of Kao Lak, you’ll find Sunset Beach and this is where you want to spend your evenings. Well frequented by tourists and locals alike, you’ll find cool bars to grab a drink while enjoying stunning sunsets over the Andaman Sea.
Snorkeling at the Surin Islands
Unknown to many, the Surin Islands have some of the best snorkeling spots in Thailand, and with so many places to choose from, that says a lot. Although it’s only an hour and a half boat trip from the mainland, it’s important to check the weather before embarking on the journey to avoid a choppy ride. Once you arrive you’ll be overwhelmed by the crystal clear water and an abundant amount of colorful fish.
Hiking Trails in Khao Lak
Khao Lak might be one of the best areas for outdoor enthusiasts out of the two provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket. You really can have your pick at whichever activity tickles your fancy, from elephant trekking, horseback riding, rafting, bird watching, and everything in between.
No matter what you choose to do, scooter rentals are a great affordable way to get around and enjoy the beautiful landscape that Thailand has to offer.
